Tue, 15 Apr 2008 15:02:55 PDT
Facebook — and bear with me, because I’ve somehow already written three Facebook-related stories today — is launching an interesting new service for measuring what’s popular with its 70 million unique visitors, worldwide. It’s called Lexicon (here), and it analyzes popular words that appear in semi-public “walls” (also known as message boards), on personal profile pages, group pages and event pages. The chart collects words from across millions of wall posts each day and displays changes in wo

TD Bank Echos CLC

Tue, 15 Apr 2008 15:15:44 PDT
Today, TD Economics released a very interesting paper on the Canadian labour market in 2007. I was pleased to see it highlight many of the same general trends that Andrew and I emphasized: the sharp decline in manufacturing jobs, the increase in part-time work, the rise of self-employment, and wages barely outpacing inflation in Alberta. Parts of the TD paper seemed quite familiar. For example, page 4 contains this discussion of manufacturing job losses: . . . it is true that job losses have

Tue, 15 Apr 2008 15:16:34 PDT

People like Bill Gates and Ray Ozzie often talk about the applicable patterns and trends that exemplify this concept, even though they don’t always mention the moniker. And Microsoft’s execution on this direction is quite visible too. From continued investments on the desktop and enterprise s

Facebook Lexicon Launches - Google Trends for Facebook

Tue, 15 Apr 2008 15:44:48 PDT
Facebook has just launched a neat new trend mapping tool, called Lexicon. Similar to Google Trends, it allows you to create a trend graph for different words and (two-word) phrases on Facebook Walls. It has a surprisingly slick UI too, with the scroll bar enabling you to zoom in and out to get different views of the trend line. You can compare up to 5 different trends by separating words/phrases with a comma. Although Lexicon compares favorably to Google Trends, it has some flaws. In our test
